Tattoos of Fairies
The Fairy Godmother comes to Cinderella's rescue; as a result, she often comes to mind when the subject of tattoos of fairies comes up.
In the animated film Sleeping Beauty, three fairies are featured - Merryweather, Flora and Fauna. They come to Princess Aurora's aid and bring a lot of comic relief to the table, too.
Most people think of fairies as being female, and they are often depicted as such. However, Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream features Oberon. He is the king of the fairies, and is strong and powerful. The popularity of men as fairies never really took off, though, and you're not very likely to see male fairies depicted in tattoos and other body artwork.
That being said, there's no reason that a guy fairy can't be used in an illustration or in other quality tattoo artwork. A precedent has been set, after all, and one only needs to look to Oberon for inspiration.
When most people think of fairies, the three sprites from that film are often envisioned. Their glittering attire and sweet, helpful dispositions are largely why so many people associate fairy tattoo designs with the forces of good.
The modern author Neil Gaiman prefaced one of his books with the following:
"This is a work of fiction. All the characters in it, human and otherwise, are imaginary, excepting only certain of the fairy folk, whom it might be unwise to offend by casting doubts on their existence. Or lack thereof."
If you decide to have fairy artwork permanently placed on your body, you've got plenty of company - fairies are extremely popular subjects in the world of tattoos.
Either way, exploring the world of fairy folklore is truly inspiring. Read up on fairy tales and you'll probably end up wanting a fairy tattoo of your very own.
Again, the author seems to have a sincere belief in the existence of fairy tattos and admonishes anyone reading his book to do likewise. It is easy to see why fairies have swirled around in popular culture, folklore and stories for so many centuries. There's just something about the idea of a magical race of tiny people who can be benevolent yet crafty that is inspiring and captivating.
Believe in the fairies
That make dreams come true,
Believe in the wonder
The stars and the moon,
Believe in the magic
From the fairies above,
They dance on the flowers
And sing the songs of love,
And if you just believe,
And always stay true,
The fairies will be there
To watch over you!
